Traditionally, dogs have outnumbered cats as pets. That is changing in some areas, though, says the European Federation For Pet Food Associations. Their recently released 2022 data give cats a solid lead in pet ownership in Europe, with 129 million pet cats and 106 million pet dogs reported.
In the United States, dogs remain the leader, but cat numbers are rising. Kitten adoptions are ahead of puppy adoptions, which bodes well for the feline future. Of course, cats are easier to care for than dogs, especially for someone with limited mobility or working long or erratic hours. Cats generally can take care of their own needs as long as adequate food, water, and a clean litterbox are available.
Meanwhile, feline veterinary research and innovation is also trending upward, led in part by Cornell University’s College of Veterinary Medicine and the Cornell Feline Health Center, which funds impactful research focused on improving feline well-being.
